Flu season is back: How UK businesses can stay resilient

Flu is on the rise again after the Christmas Holidays, says NHS.

According to the BBC, figures show that the average number of patients in UK hospital beds with flu last week hit 2924 – a rise of 9% on the previous week.

Elevated flu activity can disrupt organisations through increased absence, reduced productivity, and added pressure on critical services.

This blog is designed to help employers implement proportionate, evidence-led measures that protect staff, preserve business continuity, and limit the spread of flu in the workplace.

Building healthier, more sustainable workplaces

Managing sickness absence and attendance

Staff with flu-like symptoms should remain at home until well.

When managers communicate consistently, employees are less likely to work while unwell or be absent.

Good hand and respiratory hygiene at work

Good hygiene remains central to infection prevention. Employers should:

  • Reinforce covering coughs and sneezes and prompt disposal of tissue
  • Encourage regular, thorough hand washing with soap and water
  • Ensure tissues and waste bins are readily available in shared areas

Environment and ventilation in the workplace

Where reasonably practicable, employers should increase fresh air circulation, optimise natural or mechanical ventilation, and minimise overcrowding in enclosed spaces.

Effective ventilation has been shown to reduce the spread of respiratory infections in shared environments.

Face coverings

UKHSA guidance advises that individuals with respiratory symptoms may consider wearing a well-fitting face covering in shared indoor spaces, especially where close contact is unavoidable.

This is a voluntary, supportive measure.

Flexible and remote working

Where practical, facilitating remote or hybrid work can help manage workplace density, safeguard employees, and ensure business continuity during times of elevated community transmission.

Flu vaccination: Awareness and workplace support

Seasonal flu vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness, complications, and hospitalisation. The NHS provides free flu vaccination to eligible groups, including:

  • Adults aged 65 and over
  • People with certain long-term health conditions
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Some frontline and at-risk workers

Employers are encouraged to promote awareness of NHS eligibility and support employees in accessing vaccination promptly.
