Diabetes

Here are some top tips for managing your diabetes, whether you have just been diagnosed or need a reminder.

Track Your Daily Mood

Understanding diabetes is the best way to help you manage it. As diabetes affects the whole body there is a lot of information out there, and it can be quite overwhelming. Taking in the vast wealth of information in small chunks can be confusing, but a lot of information is a good thing – the more we understand, the better we can manage day to day.

There are some excellent books out there which break down essential information in an effective way. All diabetic people should be owners of a good diabetes book.

Keep Track of your Blood Sugars

Testing and recording your blood sugar levels will help you to understand your diabetes better as you can regularly see how you are doing. This can inform your decision making based on the results, including an appropriate diet; how to manage days that are stressful or when you are unwell; and how different activities affect you.

The more information you have, the better prepared you are for appointments with your doctor.

Eat Well to Support Your Body

There is a lot of contradictory information about diet for people with diabetes, which can be confusing. Most people tend to agree that eating foods with plenty of fibre and a low glycaemic index can help. Make sure you are getting plenty of vegetables and protein, such as lean meat, fish and unsalted nuts.

Keep Active

Regular activity can increase insulin sensitivity, which is particularly helpful for diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes.

A little activity every day improves our energy levels and can improve our health.
